This time, I will share information about a positive pregnancy test result. This way, you won’t get confused and will be able to confirm that the result is reliable. Let’s get started!
How do I know if my pregnancy test is positive?
In-home urine tests, the result will be shown according to the type of test:
1. Digital Test. These tests will display a text reading ‘Pregnant’ or ‘Not pregnant.’ Some will indicate the number of weeks after implantation of the fertilized egg; these results will differ from gestational weeks, as they are measured from the last menstrual period (Table 1).
Table 1. Possible results on a digital test indicating weeks since conception and their relation to gestational weeks.1
| Results | Time since conception | Pregnancy weeks |
| Not pregnant | You’re not pregnant | – |
| Pregnant 1-2 | You’re pregnant, and implantation occurred approximately 1-2 weeks ago | 3-4 weeks |
| Pregnant 2-3 | You’re pregnant, and implantation occurred approximately 2-3 weeks ago | 4-5 weeks |
| Pregnant 3+ | You’re pregnant, and implantation occurred more than 3 weeks ago | 5+ weeks |
2. Plus Test. This type of test shows a positive result with a plus sign (+) or a negative result with a minus sign (-). It is the same strip test, but these tests place both lines crossing each other (Image 1).

3. Common 2-line test. These tests show two lines: the test line (T) and the control line (C). For the result to be positive, both lines must appear (they can be faint or bold; it doesn’t matter). Conversely, for a negative result, only the control line appears. Any other result that does not show these two lines is an invalid test, and a new one must be performed (Image 2).

How to confirm a positive pregnancy test?
You can confirm pregnancy, in addition to a urine test, with a blood test or ultrasound. Blood tests are performed in laboratories, and the results always include 3 values:4
1. The amount of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormone in the sample.
2. The result: POSITIVE or NEGATIVE.
3. The sensitivity of the test, i.e., from what amount of hCG a positive value is detected.
Some laboratories show a fourth value:
4. A reference scale to estimate the gestational weeks based on the detected hormone level.
These results can also be measured through qualitative and quantitative analysis. The qualitative test is recommended after two weeks of sexual activity, while the quantitative test can be performed after 10 days.
For both blood and urine tests, it is preferable to take the sample when the first menstrual delay occurs, as hCG levels are very low in the first 48 hours after implantation. If the sample is taken too close to the implantation date, the result may be negative even if pregnant.
Positive test: Am I able to have a safe abortion?
If you have already confirmed a pregnancy and do not know what to do, it is important to know that you are not alone and that these situations are more common than we think. You are not more or less responsible; deciding these cases will always be difficult, but you are the only person who knows what is best for you. We can help you with information to help you make a decision.
1. Do a sincere self-assessment of your goals, desires, tools, finances, and family. How will they change? Am I ready? How will I feel after this decision? Do I feel comfortable with it?
2. If you continue the pregnancy, consult your trusted doctor to initiate all necessary care. If you decide to terminate the pregnancy, the following points may be helpful.
3. Review the legislation in your area. Investigate if abortion is permitted in your state or country. In Mexico, in 19 states, abortion is allowed at the pregnant person’s choice; gestational ages vary depending on the state.
4. Procedures. Depending on gestational age, you can access medication for abortion or aspiration. Medication abortion can be self-managed at home safely up to 10 weeks of pregnancy, while from 12 to 14 weeks, uterine aspiration is performed at a specialized clinic.
5. Where can I get an abortion? In Mexico, especially in states where abortion is legal, some clinics and hospitals support your decision to abort, which can be public or private. I recommend researching in your area which clinics and procedures you need to follow to make an appointment, as public hospitals follow specific protocols.
There is also the option of going to private clinics specializing in pregnancy termination, which have specific costs for the procedures.
If you do not want to continue with the pregnancy, you need to know organizations that support women and gestating persons in their decisions and that offer remote medical guidance nationwide through professional connections. Telefem is a nonprofit organization that provides a kit with what is needed.
