One pill… or two
To continue with our history lesson, it is now time to talk about how the abortion pill was released in a French laboratory at the end of the eighties. This is how abortion became even more significant as it could be performed without a surgical procedure and in relative ease. We now have the independence we have longed for for so long. Before the arrival on the scene of Mifepristone, the termination of a pregnancy had to take place in a hospital under circumstances that affected our privacy. There was no alternative. We were talked about and mistreated by a society that held out against letting us do as we wished. Its later combination with another pill, known as Misoprostol, was to increase its effectiveness by up to 98%.
Red pill or blue pill?
One of the main questions we and our friends may have when we start our sexual lives is about the medicines or alternatives we can use to bring about an abortion when necessary. And we are not referring to a mere desire not to go ahead with a potential new life or a simple change of heart when faced with an unwanted pregnancy, as this immediately gives rise to comments such as “you should have used a condom” or “you should have thought about that before having unprotected sex” as we must remember that abortion has been a totally valid and legal measure for some years now and we do not have to give any explanation or justification for our choice other than that a woman can opt to have an abortion when faced with an unforeseen situation.
Thank the pharmacist
So, this article looks at the pills that are specifically designed to induce an abortion or interrupt a pregnancy cycle from a merely biological perspective and with a pharmacological approach. This means that contemporary pharmacopoeia, which attends equally and without distinction to those people who decide not to go ahead with an unplanned pregnancy in full use of their rights, has now put us on a path to being free from the moral obstacles or ethical impediments that still hinder female empowerment in the twenty-first century.
Internal process
We should remember that the substances used in an abortion prevent the action of progesterone, a hormone that is indispensable for the normal development of a pregnancy so its absence means that the process is “naturally” interrupted and there is a chemical or medical abortion. This could be interpreted as a trick in the communication of messages between our womb and our brain, producing the spontaneous expulsion of the embryo when it does not have a suitable place to complete its development. So no human life is being attacked, as this is rather an unaggressive strategy that is implemented before life starts.
A matter of public health
Although medical abortion has, from its inception, been designed for our well-being and convenience, governments and groups that oppose abortion have put a lot of obstacles in its path. Firstly, they obstructed the release and distribution of these pills and then they also prevented them from reaching us when we need them.
Unplanned or unwanted pregnancies result in unsafe and dangerous abortions, with illegal abortions being one of the 3 causes of maternal death in our country. The death of a mother is a serious public health problem, as the majority of these deaths were preventable and are the result of social inequality owing to the lack of access to safe, successful procedures or to the protection of the law.
Medicine with a cause
Everything we have said goes to show that medical abortion is an alternativa from a public health perspective, as it is a safe and effective option when:
The possibility exists that we do not want to be pregnant.
The fetus has physical problems.
Pregnancy constitutes a risk to our health.
If we get pregnant as the result of rape or non-consensual sexual intercourse.
Where there’s a will there’s a way
Now that we know what we are looking for, the next question is where do we get it? Now, the web can be an option in these post-pandemic times when direct human contact is restricted. But you need to know something about the singularities of these abortifacient medications, specifically: for example, they must be white capsules or pills but if they are in the form of capsules, they could be fraudulent or contain another compound that would only delay your abortion procedure.
The packaging is also important. It should be rigid and perfectly sealed. The expiration date must be printed on somewhere on it and it must, of course, not be passed its use-by date. In the case of generic drugs, you need to remember that the active substances are Mifepristone and Misoprostol. The first is taken in a single dose, and the second is taken 1 or 2 days after the first, up to a maximum of four. Don’t forget that a self-managed abortion is your responsibility, but support will always be there over different media… and you are reading this blog for a reason, dear friend (wink-wink)
Prognoses and expectations
Once we have performed a medical abortion, we can feel safe in the knowledge that, in most cases, there are no complications. In fact, if we decide we want to have children in the future, the medications we use will not in any way affect our fertility or our ability to get pregnant again, if that is what we want.

Last considerations
The factor time is essential for these pills to be effective, as after 7 weeks, the pregnancy will reach a stage that requires other techniques (such as suction or surgery) and can no longer be an induced chemical procedure, but rather you will need a D and C, which will require a local anesthetic and must be performed and supervised by personnel from a specialist clinic.
